BMW Protection

BMW Protection

BMW builds some of the best-driving cars on the road. The paint is another story. BMW's powder clearcoat is thin, chips early, and shows damage fast — especially on M cars with wide fenders and low splitters, and on X models that see daily highway miles. We protect what the factory doesn't.

• Why BMW Needs Protection

Thin Powder Clearcoat That Chips Fast

BMW uses a powder clearcoat process that produces thinner clear coat than most luxury competitors. On hoods and front bumpers, total paint thickness is notably low. Owners commonly report visible rock chips within the first few thousand miles. PPF is the only product that physically prevents the damage.

Wide M Fenders Throw Debris at Everything

M cars run wider tracks and staggered tires. The wider the tire, the more debris gets flung into rockers, rear quarters, and lower doors. BMW's factory stone guard film on M3/M4 rear arches is too narrow — chips commonly appear just above where the OEM film ends. Extending PPF to the rockers and rear quarters fills the gap.

Frozen & Individual Paint Is Uncorrectable

BMW's Frozen matte finishes cannot be polished, buffed, or waxed — any abrasion destroys the microscopic texture and creates permanent glossy spots. Repainting a single Frozen panel runs $3,000–$5,000 and color matching is difficult. XPEL STEALTH PPF is the only way to protect a Frozen finish while preserving the factory satin appearance.

Carbon Fiber Roof Sun Damage

M3 and M4 carbon fiber roofs don't love Florida sun. UV breaks down the clear coat over the carbon weave, leading to yellowing, hazing, and eventually peeling. Fixing it runs $1,000–$4,500. PPF blocks the UV and prevents the damage — worth doing early, before the clear coat starts to go.

• Frequently Asked Questions

How much PPF does an M3 or M4 actually need?

+

Full front on an M4 is $2,799, and on an M3 it's $2,999. The wider body on M cars also sends debris into the rockers, rear quarters, and lower doors, so those areas can chip early. Full body gloss on an M4 is $5,999, and on an M3 it's $6,499. STEALTH for Frozen paint adds $500. The carbon fiber roof should also be covered. Ceramic coating is $2,200.

Is BMW's factory stone guard enough?

+

No. BMW puts a small patch of film on the rear wheel arches of M3 and M4 models, but it does not cover enough of the area that gets hit. Aftermarket XPEL ULTIMATE PLUS coverage reaches farther and protects more of the panel.

What PPF works on Frozen paint?

+

XPEL STEALTH is the right film for BMW Frozen finishes like Frozen Black, Frozen Grey, and Frozen Portimao Blue. It keeps the satin look while adding protection. Standard glossy PPF would change the finish.

Do I need paint correction before PPF on a brand new BMW?

+

Yes, in most cases. Any swirls or wash marks should be fixed before the film goes on, because those marks will still show under the film. We inspect the paint first and usually recommend a basic polish before installation. Dark colors usually need the most care.

Can you ceramic coat the wheels and calipers? Brake dust is killing me.

+

Yes, and BMW owners usually notice a big difference. BMW brakes make a lot of dust, and coating the wheels and calipers makes them easier to clean and helps them stay cleaner between washes.

Will tint mess with my head-up display?

+

No. XPEL PRIME XR PLUS does not interfere with your head-up display, parking sensors, or other safety features. It can also help reduce glare.

Is full-body PPF worth it or is partial enough?

+

If you want the most protection, yes. BMW paint can chip fast, and some Frozen or Individual paint options are expensive to replace. A standard panel repaint runs $500–$800, and Frozen finishes can cost $3,000–$5,000. Full-body XPEL ULTIMATE PLUS helps avoid that and comes with a 10-year warranty.

What about my X5 or X7 — does it need PPF too?

+

Yes. X models usually see a lot of highway miles, and their taller ride height means the hood, bumper, and lower doors take more debris from cars ahead. Full front PPF is the minimum we recommend. If you drive Florida highways every day, adding the rockers and lower doors makes sense.
