Tesla Protection
Tesla's factory paint is famously thin and soft. Rock chips that barely mark other vehicles leave visible damage on a Model 3 or Model Y — and Florida's roads make it worse. We've protected hundreds of Teslas and understand what each model actually needs.
• Why Tesla Needs Protection
Soft Factory Paint
Tesla uses a water-based paint process that produces a beautiful finish but chips and swirls far more easily than traditional automotive paint. A single run through an automated car wash can leave visible marring. PPF is the most important aftermarket upgrade for any new Tesla.
Model 3/Y Lower Rear Door Rash
The front tires on Model 3 and Model Y kick road debris directly into the lower rear doors and rocker panels. Many owners notice chipping in this area within the first few months. Extending PPF to the rockers and lower rear doors addresses the problem before it starts.
All-Glass Roof Heat Load
Tesla's panoramic glass roof and oversized windshield transmit serious heat and UV into the cabin — especially in Sarasota's year-round sun. High-performance ceramic tint reduces cabin temperature, protects the interior, and cuts A/C demand, which directly helps range.
Glossy Black Trim Marring
The gloss black B-pillars and trim pieces on most Tesla models show fingerprints, wash swirls, and fine scratches almost immediately. Ceramic coating or PPF on these surfaces keeps them looking clean between washes.

• Frequently Asked Questions
Do I actually need PPF or is ceramic coating enough?
+
Tesla's factory paint is thin, so most owners use both. XPEL ULTIMATE PLUS PPF helps absorb rock chips and scratches, while ceramic coating helps with cleanup and weather protection. Most people start with PPF on the high-impact areas — full front is $2,399 on a Model 3 or Model Y — and add Fusion Plus ceramic coating ($2,200) on top. Book both and save 10%.
What parts of my Model 3 or Y should I protect first?
+
Start with the full front end: hood, fenders, bumper, mirrors, and headlights. On Model 3 and Model Y, the lower rear doors and rocker panels are also worth protecting because the front tires throw debris there. Many owners later add full-body XPEL ULTIMATE PLUS coverage.
Will PPF or tint mess with Autopilot or the cameras?
+
No. We do not put PPF or tint over camera lenses or sensors. XPEL ULTIMATE PLUS film is clear and does not interfere with Autopilot, parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, or other Tesla safety features. We install around all sensor locations.
Can you tint the glass roof?
+
Yes. We install XPEL PRIME XR PLUS ceramic window tint on Tesla glass roofs regularly. It blocks a lot of heat and 99% of UV without reducing visibility. It can lower cabin temperature by 10-15°F and reduce A/C use, which may help preserve range. All side and back glass is $1,000, windshield tint is $500, and two front windows alone are $350.
Which colors show chips and swirls the worst?
+
Solid Black and Pearl White show swirl marks and rock chips the most because they do not have metallic flake to hide marks as well. Colors like Ultra Red hide wear a little better, but the paint underneath is just as soft. PPF protects the paint no matter which color you have.
Is full PPF actually worth it on a Model Y?
+
This comes up a lot. A quality front-end repaint after rock chips can cost $1,500-$3,000. Tesla's paint chips faster than many cars, and Florida highway driving makes that worse. Full front XPEL ULTIMATE PLUS on a Model 3 or Y starts at $2,399 and lasts 10 years. Full body gloss is $5,899, or $6,399 in STEALTH matte. For a Model S or X, full front is $2,499 and full body gloss is $5,999. If you plan to keep the car three years or more, or want to protect resale value, the protection usually pays off. Book PPF with ceramic and tint and save 15%.
Should I just get PPF through Tesla or go independent?
+
Tesla offers limited PPF packages through partners, but the coverage choices are narrower and the pricing is usually higher than what you get from an independent certified installer. At ALSET Custom, we use XPEL ULTIMATE PLUS exclusively, offer full front, full body, and custom coverage, and provide the full XPEL 10-year manufacturer warranty. We also do ceramic coating and window tint in the same visit, which Tesla's PPF partners generally do not.
Has anyone DIY'd a PPF kit? Is it doable?
+
Precut PPF kits for Tesla are easy enough to use on simple parts like door cups, door edges, and trunk ledges. For a full front or full-body install, professional work is the better choice. The Model Y's bumper curves, headlight wraps, and fender edges take experience to do cleanly, and pro installation also includes XPEL's full manufacturer warranty, which DIY kits usually do not.
